MEET THE FILMMAKER

Stephanie R.

Stephanie Alecia Rose

Hi! I'm a Tulsa, Oklahoma native, and at the age of 10, I knew that all I wanted to do was act. Not only act, but I was also determined to be a well-rounded actor, knowing and understanding other roles that had a huge hand in making a production come to life. After graduating from Tulsa Central High School in 2003, I went on to college and that's when I fell in love with directing. In December 2009, just a few months before graduating from Tulsa Community College in May, receiving my A.A. in Theatre (also later receiving my B.A. in English in 2020 with the University of Phoenix), I started as an assistant director and my first show was The Wiz. I assisted with directing a classroom full of middle school students (what was then called Gilcrease Intermediate School) who had not been introduced to the performing arts. What a reward in the end when the students fell in love with musical theatre!

Afterwards, I moved on to interning at one of the top high schools, Booker T. Washington High School, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where I continued to assist in directing students in productions such as Grease, Once on This Island, As You Like It, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hairspray, and more. In 2015, I directed my first professional show with the Broken Arrow Community Playhouse (BACP), Send Me No Flowers, based off of Doris Day's motion picture film. I then went on to continue directing professionally at BACP with shows such as Honeymoon at Graveside Manor, War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast, and recently, Play On!. As I continued to progress as a director in theatre, it wasn’t until June 2014 that I transitioned from theatre to film. I still am a theatre director and now I have added film to my resume. In the summer of 2014, I was in my second year as the Theatre teacher for the summer arts program at the historical Greenwood Cultural Center that houses much history of Black Wall Street. I helped write and film a short for the students that year that was well received by the program.

Then in November 2015, with the help of my brothers and family, I made the BIG MOVE

to Los Angeles, CA.

In July 2017, almost two years after I moved to Los Angeles, I hit the gas on my transition into directing for film. From July 2017 to present, I have written, directed, and produced 10 of my own short films and counting. Of those 10, 9 of them I filmed. My first short film was filmed by an acting buddy, Jericho Myers. seven out of the ten have been officially selected in several film festivals (Culver City Film Festival, Golden State Film Festival, Los Angeles Cine Festival, etc.) and five are award-winning films (Well Done, Decisions, Misunderstood, Brown Sugar, and 35 Minutes). I have also filmed other projects including award-winning short films, CarrierWhen It’s Your Turn, When It's Your Turn 2: Suprise Birthday, and Jump. both written and co-directed by award-winning filmmaker, Brandon Smallwood. In 2021, I won Best Director three times for my film, Brown Sugar as well as winning Best Directors for When It's Your Turn with Brandon Smallwood. My films focus on the many layers of relationships. From parents neglecting their children to families dealing with mental illness to mothers in domestic violence struggles to young adults and suicide, I continue to work towards my growth as a filmmaker, writer, and director. With more films to come, I hope to keep the much-needed conversations going one film at a time.
